In part 2 of 3 on Navigating KOL Engagement Dynamics-Activities by Phase, we present our second key insight from our KOL engagement strategy report. This article addresses the type of activity pharmaceutical companies seek from KOLs who possess specific experiences suited to support the activities of the pharmaceutical organization during particular times within a product development lifecycle.
The set of activities for which life science organizations employ Thought Leaders will change through the course of product development, as depicted in the figure below. During the initial stages leading up to a product launch, these organizations primarily seek insights from thought leaders through structured interactions such as advisory boards and consulting sessions. These early engagements are critical, as they leverage the expertise of thought leaders to refine product strategies, address potential market challenges, and ensure the product aligns with real-world clinical needs and regulatory requirements.

As the product moves closer to launch, the focus shifts markedly towards amplifying visibility and understanding through speaking engagements. During this phase, companies allocate substantial resources to facilitate speaking opportunities for thought leaders at medical conferences, seminars, and other educational forums. This strategic pivot is crucial for a successful product launch, as it allows thought leaders to communicate detailed, scientifically rigorous information directly to their peers in the physician communities. These speaking events serve not only to inform but also to build enthusiasm and acceptance among practitioners, who are often key decision-makers in the adoption of new treatments.
Moreover, post-launch, the collaboration with thought leaders continues to evolve, often incorporating continuous medical education (CME) and other forms of ongoing engagement that help maintain the product’s relevance and applicative knowledge in the medical community. These activities are vital in sustaining the product’s presence in a competitive market and ensuring that the therapeutic benefits reach the intended patient populations effectively.
This dynamic approach to engaging thought leaders at various stages of product development ensures that life science organizations can maintain a robust connection with the medical community, adapting their strategies to meet the evolving needs and expectations of both the market and regulatory landscapes.
